Who doesn't love phacopids? This endearing species hails from the (now-illegal-to-collect) far reaches of a Quebec island in the Gulf of the St Lawrence river. One of the most beautiful places on earth, Anticosti island is as fossil packed as it is remote. Newly established UNESCO protections have made it so that only the AMNH and the rough coastal seas may now collect here. One of the richest fossil beds with the most complete Ordovician/Silurian boundry known to man has shared the fate of so many classic localities.
The Geodized examples of the species occur when the trilobite is tightly enrolled. At time of deposition, very pure soloution would have been trapped inside the enrolled shell and eventually mineralized into crystal. A unique feature of this is that one can see the dark sediment that settled at the bottom of however the trilobite was oriented at time of death. The lighting technique for photography was pioneered by Markus J. Martin of GoldBugs fame. In many cases, a cell phone light can cause them to glow.
