Calymene gamachei - Prone*

This Silurian species is named for one of the more mysterious former residents of the small-ish, remote island in NE Quebec in the Gulf of the St Lawrence. Louis-Olivier Gamache was reputed to have been a sorcerer, hermit and devil worshipper. It seems much more likely that he preffered privacy and had to protect himself from the pirates who occasionally used this island as a hub for their ill-gotten trades. As names go, it's hard to beat the historical significance as this species was found on this very island and described by Chatterton and Ludvigsen in their excellent 2004 monograph. The species can be differentiated from C. nowlani (also occurring in the Jupiter) by a longer, more furrowed hypostome. The micritic limestone that encases these stunning trilobites is difficult to prepare and must be done mostly with a scribe at high magnification. For the time and trouble in the lab, a perfectly inflated, preserved trilobite with beautiful colors emerges. Check out the macro photos of the calcitic shell as tiny details have been preserved here. In 2021 the island of Anticosti was designated a UNESCO world heritage site to protect it's coastline and fossil collecting here has been made illegal for most of the Jupiter fm. Soon, specimens like this will be impossible to obtain for collectors.
